What to Ask After a Serious Diagnosis

A short framework for getting the information you need without trying to absorb everything at once.

General educational information · Updated September 2026

The real challenge

Shock and information overload can make it hard to hear, remember, or know which questions matter first.

What may be happening

  • Medical terms and options may blur together.
  • Several specialists may answer different parts of the picture.
  • Not every decision is equally urgent.

What families can do now

  • Bring one person to listen and take notes.
  • Ask for the diagnosis and next steps in plain language and in writing.
  • Create one shared list of medicines, providers, and questions.
  • Ask which decisions are urgent and which can wait.

Questions to bring to clinicians

  • What is most important for us to understand today?
  • What is the likely course, and what uncertainty remains?
  • Who is coordinating the overall plan?

When JourneyWell support can help

JourneyWell can organize the story, build a focused question list, and help the family debrief after appointments.
