Our Family Cannot Agree on What to Do

Move from entrenched positions toward shared facts, values, and a safer conversation.

General educational information · Updated September 2026

The real challenge

Conflict often intensifies when people are frightened, carrying different information, or protecting different versions of what love requires.

What may be happening

  • Family members may be arguing positions before agreeing on the facts.
  • Old dynamics can reappear under pressure.
  • The patient’s voice or documented wishes may be getting lost.

What families can do now

  • Pause the debate and list what everyone agrees is true.
  • Ask each person what they are most afraid will happen.
  • Center the patient’s stated values and chosen decision-maker.
  • Request a clinician-led goals-of-care meeting when medical facts are disputed.

Questions to bring to clinicians

  • What decisions actually need to be made now?
  • What outcomes are realistically possible?
  • Who is the legally recognized healthcare decision-maker?

When JourneyWell support can help

JourneyWell can prepare participants and facilitate a non-clinical family conversation. JourneyWell does not decide for families or mediate legal disputes.
