Signs Caregiving Has Become Unsustainable

Recognize when devotion has become an unsafe workload, and what to do before crisis.

General educational information · Updated September 2026

The real challenge

Caregiver overload can build quietly until exhaustion, resentment, mistakes, or a health crisis makes the limits impossible to ignore.

What may be happening

  • Sleep, health, work, and relationships may be deteriorating.
  • One person may be doing tasks that require more help or training.
  • The family may be solving each day without a longer-term plan.

What families can do now

  • List every recurring task and who currently carries it.
  • Name what is no longer safe or sustainable.
  • Ask helpers to take specific jobs rather than offering general help.
  • Request a care-needs and respite-resource review.

Questions to bring to clinicians

  • What level of care is now required?
  • What home care, respite, or placement options are available?
  • What changes would mean the current setting is no longer safe?

When JourneyWell support can help

JourneyWell can facilitate a caregiver-capacity check, divide tasks, and prepare conversations about added help or a change in setting.
